Ultrasound-guided paracentesis and thoracentesis at home
Abdominal paracentesis and pleural tap for patients whose condition allows the procedure at home, performed by a specialist physician under ultrasound guidance with aseptic technique, after reviewing the treating doctor's request, recent tests and medications
Home suitability is confirmed with the medical team before an appointment is set
A precise procedure, in the comfort of home
For patients with recurrent ascites or pleural effusion, repeated hospital trips can be exhausting. For suitable, stable patients we perform the drainage at home, using ultrasound to locate the fluid and choose the safest entry point, which lowers the risk of complications compared with an unguided procedure.
The procedure is done at the request of the treating doctor, with a clear goal agreed in advance: diagnostic (a fluid sample for testing) or therapeutic (relieving pressure and breathlessness). For some patients hospital is the safer setting, and we tell you so from the start.
Before the visit
The treating doctor's request, recent reports and imaging, and the latest tests your doctor asks for (such as blood count, liver and kidney function and clotting)
A full medication list, especially blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs. Do not stop any medicine yourself; your doctor decides
A clean, quiet space by the bed, and a family member present during and after the procedure
Ultrasound-guided abdominal paracentesis
Performed to relieve abdominal distension and breathlessness caused by ascites, or to sample the fluid when ascites is new or infection is suspected. Ultrasound shows how much fluid there is and the safest puncture site away from bowel and vessels.
In cirrhotic ascites, when more than 5 litres are removed, guidelines usually recommend intravenous albumin of about 6–8 g per litre removed; the doctor sets the volume and plan for each patient.
Fever with abdominal pain, vomiting blood or black stools, new confusion or drowsiness, or low blood pressure need emergency care immediately, not a home procedure.
Ultrasound-guided thoracentesis (pleural tap)
Performed to drain fluid collected around the lung, to ease breathlessness or obtain a sample for testing. Current guidelines recommend ultrasound guidance for all pleural procedures to locate the fluid accurately and reduce complications such as pneumothorax or bleeding.
The volume drained in one session is limited and set by the doctor, and the procedure is stopped if severe cough, chest pain or worsening breathlessness occurs.
Severe breathlessness at rest, low oxygen, new chest pain, or fever with suspected infected pleural fluid need hospital care. Small or loculated effusions may also be unsuitable for a home tap.
An important question first
Who should not have the procedure at home?
Patients who are unstable, have severe breathlessness, bleeding or serious infection, need prolonged observation, fluids or transfusion, or whose ultrasound shows fluid that is small, divided into pockets or hard to reach safely. In these cases we advise hospital care and explain why.
Quick answers before arranging a visit
Does it hurt?
The needle site is numbed with local anaesthetic, and most patients feel pressure or a brief sting. If there is severe pain or dizziness during the procedure, the doctor stops and reassesses.
What happens afterwards?
We check pulse, blood pressure, breathing and the puncture site before leaving, and explain the warning signs to the family: ongoing bleeding or leakage, dizziness or fainting, fever, severe pain or worsening breathlessness. In an emergency call the ambulance on 123.
Do I need a doctor's request?
Yes. Drainage is a medical procedure performed on the treating doctor's request and plan, and we need to know the cause of the fluid and recent tests before booking.
Where do we perform home procedures?
We coordinate home procedures across all areas of Cairo and Giza. Before the visit we confirm the procedure suits the patient's condition, the home setting and the appointment time.
SCANOVA brings home medical imaging, diagnostic examinations and procedures such as paracentesis and thoracentesis to patients across Cairo and Giza, with portable equipment suited to home visits and qualified medical professionals. Our coordination team confirms suitability and timing before each visit.
